Expressions (also known as Emotes) are collectible gestures, animations, and actions that are used to express yourself to others. Most Expressions can be upgraded to include visual effects and different animations.

All Expressions are acquired from Spirits; both Regular Spirits and Seasonal Spirits. There are several varieties of Expression depending upon how you use them:

  • Emotes is used here specifically for the most common type of Expression, that allows you to perform an animation or action.
  • Stances determine the basic posture used by your character when standing, kneeling, sitting, or lying down.
  • Calls (or Voices) determine the sound made when you honk or Deep Call
  • Friend Actions are animations that you can do interactively with friends. Note that although these Actions are acquired the same way as all other Expressions, none of them are accessed through the Expression Menu.

Expression Menu[]

Expressions are accessed through the Expression Menu. Some non-Expressions are also listed in this menu, all of which are detailed elsewhere:

  • Icon flame Flame accesses your flame (Candle), to ignite Candles/Darkness, or to illuminate dark areas.
  • Icon home Home Action lets you teleport Home
  • Prop icon: If you have a Prop equipped, its icon appears next to the Home icon, allowing you to equip it.
  • Request guide Request Guide: allows new players to ask experienced players for help finding Spirits.
  • Emote-basic sit Sit: cycles between standing, kneeling, sitting, and lying down.

In addition, the third tab in the Expression Menu lists 5CandlesSpell Blessings.

Upgrading Expressions[]

Most Emotes (not Stances or Voices) in the menu are upgradable, with typically 4 total Levels (3 upgrades). Expression upgrades are purchased through the Friendship Trees of the Spirits who taught you the Level 1 Expression.

Once you have purchased an upgrade, a number of dots will appear above the Expression in your menu. Tap the Expression icon once to perform the basic action. Tap and hold it until the second dot highlights, then let go, to perform the upgrade. Hold even longer before letting go to perform the third, fourth, etc., once you have purchased them.

Emotes[]

The order in which Expressions are shown in the Expression Menu is somewhat idiosyncratic. The Regular Spirit Expressions are grouped together by Realm in the standard Realm order. The newer Seasonal Spirit Expressions are listed at the end. But the earlier Seasons are interspersed semi-randomly between the Regular Spirits, in an apparently fixed order. The order is definitely not influenced by the order in which you learn the Spirits.

Any Expressions that you have not yet learned are omitted from the menu; the only exception is Regular Spirit Expressions granted by Spirits on your current map that appear dimmed-out in the menu. Therefore, your menu will be shorter than the provided list, but the icons you have learned will be in this same order.

The levels column indicates the total number of available Levels for each Expression, where 4 is typical (original, Level 1 Expression, plus three upgrades).

Friend Actions[]

Friend Actions are Expressions that are performed interactively with friends. They are activated from the Friendship Menu, and therefore do not appear in the Expression Menu with all the other Expressions. The first three Friend Actions are base actions that are not associated with any Spirits. The remaining ones are learned from Seasonal Spirits by reliving memories, just like all other Expressions.

Trivia[]

  • The sound effects during five particular Expressions (LaughingLightCatcher-1 Laugh, SlumberingShipwright-1 Yawn, Assembly-chuckling-emote Chuckle, SOTLP-Sneezing-Geographer Sneeze, and SOA-Cackling-Cannoneer-emote Evil Laugh) are different when heard from unlit (gray) and extinguished players. This difference extends to all Levels of the Expression.
  • The sound of the Call heard from unlit (gray) and extinguished players is completely unique.
  • The AURORA-Cure-for-Me-expression-icon-Credit-Morybel Cure for Me Dance is the only Expression where it's possible to obtain the Level 2 upgrade without obtaining the Level 1 version.
  • Levels 1 and 2 of the Herb Gatherer's Herb-Gatherer-Emote-icon Whistle Expression is the only Expression to feature sound effect variations when used, with four unique whistle sounds possible.
